MEMOIR
This assignment asks you to apply what you’ve learned this semester through our course texts, discussions, and presentations, and create your own memoir.
MEMOIR (40%)
1. You will select an aspect of your life or your family history and create an academic memoir about it.
2. As you think about your memoir, take into account the story you want to tell, the skills you have or want to acquire, and the equipment you have access to as you select the piece’s medium: alphabetic writing, videos, podcasts, slidecasts, and webtexts. If you would like to use a medium not listed here, talk to me about it.
3. You should aim for the following length: alphabetic writing (15-20 pages), videos, podcasts, and slidecasts (8-15 minutes), and webtexts (15-20 minutes navigation time).
4. Remember to select a narrow enough topic that you can convey something meaningful about it in short form.
5. You will have 15 minutes on the last day of class to present your memoir in full or partially to the class. Depending on what medium you choose, you can hit play, read to us, or guide us through what you’ve created.
Delivery
You will share the memoir partially or in full with the class on 12/9. Before class time, please upload your final memoir to the course’s Google Drive folder titled “Memoir.” If your memoir should be reached through a link, upload/create a document with your name, the piece’s title, and the link.
“INITIAL THOUGHTS ON MEMOIR” PRESENTATION (5%)
1. Sign up on our Google Drive document titled “‘Initial Thoughts on Memoir’ Presentation Sign Up Sheet” to present on one of these three dates: 9/23, 10/7, and 10/14.
2. Do an informal 5-minute presentation (backing materials like a Powerpoint are optional) where you tell us what event/aspect/relationship/relative you want to explore through your memoir. If you’re trying to decide between various ideas, feel free to talk about them and ask for help choosing.
3. Discuss the medium you’re considering for your memoir. If you’re trying to decide between various media, feel free to talk about them and ask for help choosing.
4. This is your time to make sense of the project with a group of people who are embarking on a similar journey. Ask the questions you want answered as the project takes shape for you.
Delivery
You will deliver your presentation on the day you signed up for. Please be mindful of time. You have five minutes to present and we’ll have five minutes for questions from your classmates.
“MEMOIR IDEAS REVISITED” PRESENTATION (5%)
1. Sign up on our class Google Drive document titled “‘Memoir Ideas Revisited’ Presentation Sign Up Sheet” to present on one of these three dates: 10/21, 10/28, and 11/4.
2. Do a 5-minute Powerpoint/Prezi presentation where you give us a summary of the event/aspect/relationship/relative(s) you want to explore through your memoir. As you talk about it, please tell us why you think your chosen topic would make a strong memoir and how you aim to blend the academic with personal storytelling in this piece.
3. List five sources you aim to use for your memoir (and you can think of sources broadly, from scholarly pieces to a relative’s diary to family photo albums)
4. Discuss the selected medium and why you chose it. If it’s not alphabetic writing, do you have the equipment/knowledge to work in this new medium? If you don’t, what are your plans for making the memoir happen?
